Generally, the use of batteries in the current generation is evident everywhere. Chargeable batteries are as well widely used. Almost everyone (actually everyone) has at some point experienced a dead car battery. Never mind, it is simply a common occurrence mostly in winter.
Fortunately, there is a solution. A car battery charger (portable) can get you on the move when your battery is dying or sluggish. Therefore, you should have one always inclusive in your emergency kit.
Many of us have seen the car battery charger, right? But how does it work?
How the car battery charger works
Basically, on the outer picture, a car battery charger simply works in that it forces the current in reverse direction through the battery. Ideally, this means that reverse chemical reactions (to those during discharging) take place at the electrodes hence the battery is charged.
However, this is actually how the whole process works:
To start with, a car battery charger is a DC power supply source. At this point, they use a transformer to step down the main input voltage of the AC to that level which is required according to the transformer’s rating.
Always the transformer is of high power type which is capable of producing an output of high current which is required by most of the lead-acid batteries.
At the point, it uses a bridge rectifier configuration to rectify low voltage AC to DC, and further an electrolytic capacitor of high value smoothes it.
This current (DC) is then fed into an electric circuit whereby the voltage is regulated to a constant level, and then it is applied into the battery that is charging, where now the energy is kept through a chemical reaction (internal process).
When it comes to the automatic battery chargers, they do have incorporated voltage sensor circuits which sense the voltage a battery that is under charge.
Automatically the charger is switched OFF at the point the voltage of the battery is at the optimum level that is required.
Just like suitcases batteries as well hold the same principle, in that the more you pack, the harder it gets for more to be packed-the longer it will take. This is however easy to understand if only you can remember that when charging a battery it essentially involves the reversal of the chemical reactions taking place during discharging.
Also, remember that overcharging is worse than undercharging as when fully charged and the battery continues to charge, they get rid this extra energy. The way they do it is by building pressure inside and heating up which eventually make them to rapture, leak gas or chemicals, and even explode.
Generally, a car battery charger can be simple in design, but ideally, batteries do not like the crude charging voltages, therefore, all the time it is recommended to use good quality and constant voltage chargers for the battery to be consistent and in good shape.
